Oregon Youth to Compete Saturday in TrackTown Youth League Championship

More than 240 kids representing 70 cities across the state of Oregon and Southwest Washington will converge Saturday, June 27 at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon for the 2015 TrackTown Youth League Championship presented by Providence Health & Services. The meet will begin at 7:00 p.m., following the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships.

Saturday’s event will mark the culmination of 12 free all-comer track meets across Oregon for kids ages 8-14, with the top finishers in each event and age group earning a qualifying spot in the Championship. More than 1,000 kids — including many who had never before tried track and field — participated this spring in TrackTown Youth League meets held in Bend, Coos Bay, Corvallis, East Portland, Eugene, Hermiston, Hillsboro, Hood River, La Grande, Medford, North Portland and Warrenton/Astoria. The number of total participants more than doubled that of last year’s inaugural season.

The TrackTown Youth League was created by the Oregon Sports Authority and TrackTown USA to encourage Oregon’s youth to become healthy and active members of the community, inspire them to have Olympic-sized dreams and further Oregon’s position as the spiritual home for track and field in this country.

“We are thrilled to share a little bit of the magic of TrackTown USA with young people across the state of Oregon,” said Vin Lananna, President of TrackTown USA.

“We are delighted to have had more than 1,000 kids from across the state participate in TrackTown Youth League meets this spring,” said Drew Mahalic, CEO of the Oregon Sports Authority. “So many of them got their first introduction to a very accessible sport, one which has come to define our state.”

The TrackTown Youth League is supported by: Providence Health & Services, Willamette Valley Track and Field, Oregon Sports Action, Comcast, Comcast SportsNet Northwest, Youth Runner Magazine, Oregon Road Runners Club and the Clark Foundation.
