Timbers, Vancouver Whitecaps meet on the way to MLS

The Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps game Thursday night marks the final meeting between the two teams during the 2009 regular season. However, off the pitch, the two teams will share many concerns over the next two years.

Portland and Vancouver were awarded Major League Soccer expansion teams in March and both franchises are scheduled to join the league in 2011. Both franchises are racing to meet myriad deadlines, develop strategies and finalize personnel decisions to make sure they are ready when MLS beckons in 2011.

“Vancouver and Portland are in similar situations in many ways,” said Vancouver team president Bob Lenarduzzi. “We both have parallel paths. We’re currently operating teams, but we have to have an eye on 2011.”
