Southern Oregon

Home to world-class rivers, thrilling mountain snow sports, and challenging mountain biking and hiking trails, the Southern Oregon region is an outdoor recreation paradise that offers something for everyone. Hike, snowshoe or cross-country ski around spectacular Crater Lake National Park, one of nature’s most stunning creations. Then head over to the 200-mile Rogue River, designated as one of the nation’s first “Wild and Scenic Rivers” by Congress in 1968. The Rogue boasts world-class salmon and steelhead fishing, whitewater rafting, and world famous jet boat excursions.

A must for any thrill-seeking visitor to Southern Oregon is a trip to the “Hang Gliding Capital of the West” on Black Cap Mountain near Lakeview. Hang gliders and paragliders from all over the world eagerly flock to the region to ride the strong updrafts and soar to record breaking distances. The annual Rat Race paragliding competition near Jacksonville is one of the largest and best in the world, while Lakeview hosts the Umpteenth Annual Festival of Free Flight each year on the 4th of July, offering a truly remarkable spectacle as 300 hang gliders simultaneously fill the sky.

Southern Oregon has even more variety to offer the sports enthusiast, from Medford’s Rogue Run Half Marathon and the newly-established Wild Rogue Relay to U.S. Cellular Community Park with 15 athletic fields, and the deep, fluffy powder of Mt. Bailey, Mt. Ashland, and Warner Canyon. The Klamath County Sports Complex offers one of the finest skateboard parks in the U.S. along with an indoor soccer arena and outdoor fields for all sports.
