Oregon Wine Country Half Marathon expected to draw more than 2,200 runners; Olympian Kara Goucher to speak at race expo

The 4th Annual Oregon Wine Country Half Marathon, presented by Subaru, is fast approaching on Sunday, September 1. The scenic 13.1-mile race starts at Stoller Family Estate Winery, and finishes in downtown Carlton at Main and Pine Streets. Produced by Destination Races, the event is the fourth of six in the Wine Country Half Marathon Series. Over 2,200 runners are expected to compete in the race this year.

Kara Goucher, a 2008 and 2012 Olympian representing the United States, will be the guest speaker at the Race Expo on Saturday, August 31 at the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum from 10:00am to 6:00pm. The expo is open to the public and features packet pickup, product sampling, demonstrations and seminars, plus discounts to Evergreen attractions including the museums, Water Park, and IMAX theater. Goucher, who finished 11th in the 2012 Olympic Marathon in London, will appear with husband and runner Adam Goucher to talk about her Olympic experiences, as well as how she balances life as a mother and training. The Gouchers will be available to meet from 3:30pm to 5:30pm near the Foot Traffic and Playworks Portland booths outside the Aviation Museum. Kara will host a Q & A seminar at 4:00pm. Kara Goucher will also speak at the Race Dinner held at Red Ridge Farms starting at 6:30pm. Registration is required for the dinner.

A new addition to the race expo this year is the Playworks Fun Run at the Evergreen Aviation Museum. The race is designed for all ages and families, and runs around the Evergreen property. There are two distances (1/2 mile and 1 mile) and two registration options for the run. Option A includes admission to the Waterpark. Proceeds benefit Playworks Portland and the Evergreen Scholarship Foundation. The Fun Runs start at 11:00am on Saturday, August 31, during the Race Expo. The Oregon Wine Country Half Marathon starts at 7:00am with the first finishers expected to arrive in downtown Carlton at Main and Pine Streets shortly after 8:00am. There is also a two-person relay option available for runners, with the transition occurring at mile 6 near Abbey Road Farm. Following the race, runners and their guests are treated to the Wine & Music Festival, presented by United Healthcare and Ken Wright Cellars. The festival is held along Pine St. in downtown Carlton from 9:30am to noon. Two dozen wineries and local breweries will pour tastings at the festival and the band Franco Paletta & The Stingers will play on the stage next to Carlton Cellars. The awards ceremony begins at 10:30am on the stage. A cash prize purse is offered to the top three overall winners, and the top three finishers in each age group receive a bottle of wine.

The race is expected to sell out this year for the first time, according to Matt Dockstader, Race Director and President of Destination Races. “We’ve always been able to attract a heavy influence of out-of-state participants to this race, and now the Oregon running community is discovering what a jewel of an event we have here in the heart of the Willamette Valley,” said Dockstader. Sergio Reyes, of Palmdale, CA, and winner of the 2010 USA Marathon championship, is the favorite in the men’s field.

Destination Races partners with local and regional charities and non-profit organizations to serve as the beneficiary and volunteer provider for the event. Carlton Together Cares, Playworks Portland and ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer are the beneficiaries this year. Sponsors for the 2013 Oregon Wine Country Half Marathon include Subaru, Ken Wright Cellars, Oregon Sports Authority, Spirit Mountain Casino, Stoller Family Estate, UnitedHealthcare, ACCELERADE, SPIbelt, Willamette Valley Wineries Association, Riedel, Touring & Tasting, RunCoach, Foot Traffic running stores and 101.9 KINK FM.
