K-8 physical education expansion grant application now available

The grant program created by the passage House Bill 3141 earlier this year to help provide funding to schools in meeting the new minute standards for teaching PE is now up and running. Grant applications are now being accepted by the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) through January 15th to provide professional development to teachers in meeting the minute standards. Grants will be awarded on February 15th.  Click here to access the grant application.

Later in January there will be an additional grant application available to school districts to hire new PE teachers in order to meet the new minute standards. For now the grants are specifically dealing with professional development.

The PEEK-8 grant was established by the state to support activities related to meeting the Physical Education requirements for instruction of students in kindergarten through grade 8 as described in OAR 581-020-0250 (adopted December 6, 2007).  Districts and public charter schools have flexibility within the grant guidelines for determining specific evidence-based professional development that will lead to meeting the physical education requirement for instruction of students in kindergarten through grade 8.
