Governor Kulongoski to join Winter Celebration at the Square

Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski will join Oregon Olympians and Paralympians Friday evening at the Oregon Sports Authority’s “Winter Celebration at the Square,” a free public viewing event featuring the broadcast of the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games Opening Ceremony on two giant LCD screens at Portland’s Pioneer Courthouse Square. Prior to the Opening Ceremony broadcast, Governor Kulongoski will give remarks on the spirit of the Olympics and what it means for Oregonians to have this year’s Games in the Pacific Northwest.

“It will be an honor to share the stage at Pioneer Courthouse Square with distinguished Olympians and Paralympians from Oregon,” said Governor Kulongoski. “Gathering together in Portland’s ‘living room’ to watch the Opening Ceremonies is quintessentially Oregonian.”

Following Governor Kulongoski’s speech, Oregon Olympians and Paralympians, including decathlete Dave Johnson and snowboarder Lisa Kosglow, who was recently named president of the Oregon Chapter of U.S. Olympians, will share memories of their unique Olympic experiences with the crowd. Portland Trailblazers founding broadcaster/ambassador Bill Schonely will also be on hand.

“Winter Celebration at the Square” is being organized by the Oregon Sports Authority, through fundraising and generous sponsorships.

The live event program with Governor Kulongoski and Oregon Olympians and Paralympians will begin at 7:30 p.m. Local Olympic programming on KGW NewsChannel 8 will begin at 5:00 p.m. on the LCD screens at Pioneer Square. NBC’s broadcast of the Vancouver 2010 Opening Ceremony will begin at approximately 9:00 p.m.

In addition to the broadcast, the Oregon Sports Authority is providing complimentary warm drinks, live music performed by Portland reggae band Rhythm Culture and great prize giveaways throughout the evening.
