Behemoth LLC and TAOW Productions today announced the line up for the upcoming 2007 Nelscott Reef Tow In Classic. The competition will take place in Lincoln City, Oregon, sometime between October 1 and December 31. As traditional for such “big wave” competitions, the exact date of the event will depend upon wave conditions, which will be continually monitored during the holding period. Once maximum wave conditions are observed, competitors and fans will have 48 hours notice to arrive.
“We have some of the greatest tow surfers from around the world on board for this years event,” said John Forse, event organizer. “The competition will be fierce with a line up as stacked as we have for 2007.”
Now in its third year, the Nelscott Reef Tow In Classic was able to put together a who’s who of big wave surfing. The field has also expanded international boundaries, with competitors coming from Australia, South Africa, Morocco, Brazil, and the US.
Oregon is well represented this year, as well. Dave Mcgill and Joel Smith are coming from Seaside, OR. Skiz Doudt was born and raised on the Oregon coast and is partnered with Hawaii Chava Greenlee. Kenny Doudt, Skiz’s father, the survivor of a brutal shark attack in Cannon Beach, OR, recently passed away doing what he loved best, surfing in Hawaii.
There are many returning faces as well. The winners of the 2005 contest, Zach and Jake Wormhoudt will be back as partners this year, after a broken foot separated them the during practice for the 2006 event. Garrett McNamara and Kealii Mamala, 2006 contest winners, will the defending their title as well. Other world-class competitors will include such teams as Brad Gerlach and Mike Parsons, Adam Replogle and Alistair Craft, Raph Bruhwiler and Keith Malloy, Greg and Rusty Long, as well as Ross Clarke-Jones, Twiggy Baker, Jeff Clark and Peter Mel. See below for complete list of invites and alternates.
The holding period for the 2007 Nelscott Reef Tow In Classic starts October 1 and extends through the end of December. Contest organizers closely monitor weather conditions, swell size and direction, and storm activity to try to determine the best combination of wind, weather, and swell. Contestant will be given 48 hours notice to drop everything and get to Lincoln City, OR.
“We have had two years of calling the contest on the best days of they year”, said John Forse. “Meteorologists are calling for a La Nina year, which could mean a greater frequency of storms, but more potential for high winds and rain associated with them. Hopefully, this year will be bigger than last”.
The Nelscott Reef web page is being re-designed and should be launched in conjunction with the start of the holding period. For more information visit www.nelscottreef.com. For sponsorship opportunities, contact Taow Productions (www.taowproductions.com).
The Nelscott Reef Tow In Classic is the only tow in contest on the North American continent and Oregon’s only professional surf event.
